In the spirit of community gathering, market organizers have planned an end-of-the-season party!
Date Saturday evening Oct 24th
Time 5pm
Place Alpha Building (former Broad Street Furnishings)
Tickets $7 at the door
Drinks $ Beer, $ wine, fresh ginger ale and lemonade
BYO plate & spoon If you forget, rentals will be available for $1.

NCFMA member-farmers are planning to cook 60 gallons of meat and vegetarian soups to be served with fresh bread donated by Fulcrum Farm, Flour Garden Bakery and SummerThymes Deli.

If you can help set up – meet there at 3:30 or 4!

Organizers are asking everyone to bring your own bowl and spoon, as this will be a zero-waste event. Local favorite, Ragged But Right, will be playing music with contra dancing after dinner.

The most exciting moment of the evening for someone will be winning the top raffle prize, a weekend at a Tahoe cabin, donated by FoodWineArt Magazine. Five additional prizes will be awarded including a large basket of winter produce and a $100 gift certificate to Peaceful Valley Farm and Garden Supply.

Also, remember there are just two farmers markets left this season, this Saturday and next (Halloween). Get your pumpkins and stock up on winter storage veggies like squash, onions, apples, garlic, etc. If you aren’t sure how to properly store something, ask your farmer – they’ll know best.

October 3rd Market Update

October 1st, 2009 by Mali

Happy Fall to you all-

What is it about 60 degree weather that makes me want to eat squash?  All of the sudden this week, I cant wait to see the piles of pumpkins, butternuts and acorn squashes at the market.  Food I haven’t even thought about eating for months, I’m now craving like crazy.  I guess that’s the beauty of being in the rhythm of eating seasonally – you get what you want, when you want it (and because it’s in season, it’s always the best it can be).

Don’t let this cooler weather keep you away from the market – there are plenty of hot drinks from Broad Street Bistro, NC Classic Cafe or Summer Thymes to keep your hands and belly warm while you do your shopping.  There are five Saturdays in October, meaning five more markets for the season, which ends on Halloween.  Remember market hours are now 9am-1pm.

Farmer, Tim VanWagner, checks on the 40 gallons of soup served at the NCFMA Spring fundraiser at the Miners Foundry.

The NCFMA is hosting a Harvest Hoedown on October 24th 5-9pm in the Alpha Building (formerly the furniture store, soon to be California Organics) to celebrate the end of this very successful agricultural season and raise funds for the Farmers Market.  Tickets will be available at the Market booth starting this week, or at the APPLE Center for Sustainable Living at 412 Commercial Street.  Tickets are $10, children under 8 get in free.  Dinner will be a medley of soups and breads, made by our farmers, and beer and wine will be available for sale.  Music will start at 7 with contra dancing until 9pm.  Friends of the Farmers Market get in FREE!  Don’t miss it!

See you Saturday,

September 26th Market Update

Wow, the last market of September
is already here!  Wasn’t it just July?

This extra warm weather is keeping the summer crops coming strong.  Four Frog Farm’s recent newsletter offered saucing tomatoes by the flat at wholesale prices – see www.fourfrogfarm.com for more information, or stop by their booth on Saturday.

We’ve enjoyed the addition of Donnor Fruit Trail at the market the last few weeks and they’ll be back at least one more week with peaches, apples, and apple cider!  For those of you who’ve missed Summer Thyme’s breakfast burritos the last couple weeks, they’ll be back this week also.  They are also featured in the latest FoodWineArt magazine (available at the Market booth) for their partnership with River Hill Farm, using local produce in their staple dishes.   Now that’s community – the web of relationships that keeps growing between farmer and consumer.  I love that!

See you Saturday!

September 19th Market Update

September 16th, 2009 by Mali

Hello Friends,

What a huge weekend this is coming up, not that last weekend was slow around here.  We have such a diverse and busy community, I love to see it all.  Like last week when the Marching Presidents strolled through the farmers market on Saturday, and the Rotary Duck made an appearance also!

This weekend many of our regular volunteers will be out at the SYRCL Yuba River Cleanup, so we’ll need some fill-ins.  If you’d like to volunteer this week, Patrick Rodysill is our Volunteer Captain, please email him if you can help set up (7:30 – 9) or tear down (1-2) at rody418@earthlink.net

river082209-croppedAlso, on Saturday is the Downtown Nevada City Sidewalk Sale starting at 10am.  An extra incentive to come on down to the Farmers Market, and then browse for sidewalk bargains while you’re there!  Remember the market is now in full swing during our fall hours 9am-1pm, so come on down for the last few weeks of vine-ripe tomatoes and melons.  Wow, have they been good this year, can or freeze them while you can, you’ll be glad you did in February when you’re craving that taste of summer!  And get ready for pumpkins and winter squash, they’re about to jump off the vines!

Save the Date for the Nevada City Farmers Market fall fund raiser:  Soup Night on October 24th.  Come celebrate the harvest with fresh soup, bread and … contra dancing?!  More details to come soon.  Tickets will be available at the Market Booth soon.

As always, the Nevada City Farmers Market brings you local art and music along with local farms and friendship!  Only 7 weeks left so get your Farmers Market tee-shirts and totes for holiday gifts now before we run out!

See you Saturday!

The Nevada City Farmers Market Announces Fall Hours Starting this week: Saturday mornings 9am – 1pm

September 10th, 2009 by Mali

The Nevada City Farmers Market will start and end one hour later each Saturday starting this week, September 12th, 2009. They are switching from their Summer Hours of 8am – 12 noon, to their Fall Hours of 9am – 1pm.

asylum082209-1In addition to following the trend of shoppers to arrive later as the sunrise gets later, the hour change benefits volunteers and vendors who would otherwise be arriving and setting up the market in the dark. Each week, approximately 10 volunteers arrive 1 ½ – 2 hours before the market opens to set up the displays, entrance gate, tables and chairs, shade sails, mister system, music stage/tent, signs etc. Vendors then arrive an hour before the opening bell rings to unload their vehicles, and set up their beautiful displays of seasonal produce, locally made and environmentally friendly gifts, household items, and novelties.

To accommodate the shifting hours to include a lunch time crowd, Summer Thymes Bakery and Deli will start to offer salads and sandwiches in addition to their addictive cinnamon roles and other baked goods. However for those who love to eat breakfast at the market, locally made pastries, and made-to-order pancakes and crepes will still be available throughout the market season.

The Nevada City Farmers Market takes place every Saturday Morning 9am – 1pm on Union Street in downtown Nevada City through October 31st. The last market on Halloween will feature costumes and a Jack-o-lantern making contest. An end of the season Soup Night Celebration is being planned for October. For more information on who’s at the market, times, locations, special events and market updates see www.NCFarmersMarket.org or email Manager@NCFarmersMarket.org

September 5th Market Update

September 4th, 2009 by Mali

It’s true… September is here!  That means two months left of the Nevada City Farmers Market.

Make a note: THIS IS THE LAST WEEK OF OUR SUMMER HOURS: 8-noon.  STARTING NEXT WEEK, the market will be open 9am-1pm.  Same place, Union Street – in downtown Nevada City.

So on this holiday weekend we welcome back our special guests, Think Local First, with their educational demonstration titled Local Agriculture First.

They have invited friends from the local ag community to demonstrate and discuss our local resources from local farms, including Backyard Botanicals, and Living Lands Agrarian Network.  We will also have special guest, Aldo the Goat and his human friend, Thea Blair with cart rides, and goat demonstrations!

As always, the art and music will be all local, all the time with Loana Beeson and Yvone Doctor in the artist booths, and Saul Rayo and Elena Powell lining up local talent on the stages.

Come relax this holiday weekend, bring your out of town guests for breakfast, and enjoy the show!

See you Saturday,
Mali

August 29th Market Update

August 27th, 2009 by Mali

sunlight082209-cropped

Hi All -

Well a fall chill is in the air – reminds me of the cool season crops to come, winter squash, broccoli, brussels sprouts, beets, and carrots – sounds like a wonderful soup to me!

Speaking of soup, the NCFMA board is planning a Fall Soup Night Fundraiser in October – free to Friends of the Farmers Market and volunteers to celebrate the end of the season.  If you came to the Spring Soup Night at the Miners Foundry – you experienced the wonderful soups, breads and conversations.  If you missed it, this event will be your opportunity to meet the farmers, market organizers and volunteers.  Check our website for details as they emerge.  www.NCFarmersMarket.org

A word about becoming a Friend of the Farmers Market:  we offer “friend” sponsorships in order to keep our booth fees the lowest around for our hard working farmers.  As you may know, farming is a noble profession but not a lucritive one, so we, at the Nevada City Farmers Market, really try to keep the expenses for farmers as minimals as possible, so they can reinvest their profits into next year’s crops, and their workers.  Friendship levels are available from $10 – $100, to fit every budget.  Stop by the Market Booth for more information and to sign up to be a Friend of the Farmers Market.

This week David McKay is back with his beautiful photographs, and it’s your last chance to see and order your recycled children’s picnic table from Immaculate Tree.  Musicians Kelly Flemming, Wild Turkey and April & Zuma will play – thanks to Saul Rayo and Elena Powell for playing last week and for organizing all the music for the Nevada City Farmer Market all year – what a huge help!

See you Saturday!  8am to noon on Union Street!

August 22nd Market Update

August 21st, 2009 by Mali

Come on down to the Farmers Market this Saturday in downtown Nevada City, 8am -12pm

Help the Nevada City Farmers Market win $5000 – see ncfarmersmarket.org for details!

This week:

TEN farms to choose from with the cream-of-the-summer-produce-crops!  Not to mention honey, oils, nursery plants, meat, eggs, pickles, and more.  Get it while you can: dry it, can it, freeze it or eat it right there in the street.

As always, we love to welcome our local artists to the market as well as local musicians.
Look for Eileen Blodgett and Paulette Sand-Gilbert in the Artist booths.  At the Robinson Plaza Stage you can hear the music of Elena Powell and The Codgers.  While Kelly Flemming will be singin’ and playin’ at the top of the street.

We tested the expanded mister system last week, we’re now set up for 100′ of coolness on the sunny side of Union Street.

Bring the family for breakfast: crepes, flapjacks, breakfast burritos, pastries, fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee!

See you Saturday!
